funeral, farm and beach

good evening!

last week something sad happened - one of the oldest residents of the community passed away. i visited him last year, by then i was told that he is at least 320 years old, but probably older! now he passed away - may he rest in peace!
i asked for permission to take some pictures - so get some impressions.
digging the grave into the rocky ground is hard work. the dead body comes into a cave and is covered with wood first

as you can see it was a muslim funeral
see some pictures of the last prayer

rest in peace

women pray seperated and behind the men - like in the mosque

after the...

...prayer the corpse was burried...

...and the coffin will be used for the next person

preparing food for the guests

may he rest in perfect peace
the school has reopened - we provided the children who formally lived in the orphange with school books and pens, school shoes and uniforms

the NGO has also a farm, and the farmer is peter. last week he showed me his personal farm - a pretty amazing place!

this is yams, a typical african food. it tastes like potatoe

we are still in the rainy season. sometimes its amazing - but can not really be reflected in fotos...as you can imagine!

he is taxidriver, she brought the car to accra! nice one!! good luck!
i was in accra to renew my work permit and my resident permit...and right now i am at the beach, in keta. it is in the volta region, about 3 hours in the east of accra. its a really nice place. i am at "emancipation beach" - a good pick if you come to keta. just before the fishermen returned and we bought some fresh fish - any minute from now i will enjoy it! they have lovely food here! a good place to be...!

..see for yourself!

have a nice evening - i have to eat now!

thats whats up

hi everybody!

sorry, it has kept a long time...its just that not so much is happening since i am "just" working and not travelling - so there is not too much to say. but still i want to show you some pics.

haha, and since we hear everyday more details how much NSA and so on are able to read, absorb, safe and use later on, it also doesnt matter to have pics with people again. they know us anyway! fuck them!!

ooops...excuse my language! dear NSA, you are welcome to read this if you want (since it doesnt matter what i want)!

mirijam, gunter and my drugs
sister mirijam (keine nonne, sonder nun meine schwester!!) has stayed in guabuliga for 7 month! it has been a pleasure to have you here - and my dear mum, you have an additional child again! mirijam left, and gunter came to ghana. we have been working together in uganda, and it was also really nice ti have him here. and the third party on the pics is drugs...i fell sick with malaria, and they also suspected typhiod fever.
...so i had to take a lot of drugs...

...this was my breakfast. horrible...! i was just sleeping all day. the ones that know me better know that normally i do not take any drugs...so it was really too much for my body
by the beginning of august i had recovered, and went back to the village. by then the shea nuts were ready. shea nut is one of the main ingredients in cosmetic products also in the west - but it grows for example here in the north of ghana. the ingredients are from here, but the money is made in a different place.

we are in the rainy season - people grow maize arond their houses

the compund in which i live (the left house is my house)
as it is rainy season, also the grass in our compound grows. one day we decided to use a goat to "cut" the grass...it was a very noisy night, and we found a different solution the next day!!

our farm
i am learning a lot in ghana - also a out religion. at home i was never close to people who are muslims, but here i am very close to some of them. e.g. half of our staff is muslim, i have a brother who is a muslim... as you might know in july and august ramadan took place. for 29 or 30 days (depending on the moon) the people are not allowed to eat during day (as long as the sun is up). when ramadan ends, people celebrate "sala" - its a very important day for muslims and there is a lot of food. people also give food to their friends...see what came to my house at sala day!

sala food
i still ask myself a question and was not yet able to get the answer: how do muslims do when they live more north or south of the polar circle? at times there is just day, and at times there is just night. what would be the consequence?! if anyone knows the answer i am grateful! because it cant be that they have to fast for a full month continuously...or that they are allowed to eat throughout ramadan because the sun doesnt come out... anyway.
